Six PE teams to compete in inaugural Urban Cup

The inaugural Urban Cup soccer tournament will be played on Friday and Saturday at Nelson Mandela University’s south campus. The competition, presented by the Urban Academy School in partnership with Madibaz Football and Pathways Sport Development, involves six high schools from Port Elizabeth. They are Urban Academy, Victoria Park, Ndzondelelo, Chapman, Bethelsdorp and Newton Tech.
The competition will comprise U16 and U19 sections, with the U16 final scheduled for 2pm and the U19 final at 2.45pm. “This is the first tournament but we believe it will be an annual event,” event organiser Michael van Huyssteen said. “EnviroServ, who are the main sponsors, said they would sponsor us this year and next year. There are also many more who are applying for positions for next year’s event. Each school had to pay a R500 participation fee for each competition. NMU will use the event to scout for players for their varsity soccer team, so players could stand a chance to get a bursary.”
Van Huyssteen said the winning teams would get full soccer kits and gold medals. There are also prizes up for grabs for man of the match, goalkeeper of the match and top goal-scorer of the tournament.
Entrance to the tournament is free. Friday’s programme will run from noon to 5.15pm, while Saturday’s action will start at 9am.
